When thinking about home security, we all want peace of mind that our locks will protect our homes, families and businesses. Yet, some of the high-security locks on the market (Assa, Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, Schlage Primus) can cost over $300 for a deadbolt! Most of us want the security, but just can’t afford the cost that a higher degree of security can cost. As a small business, ABC Lock & Key continuously strives to find balance between high security and affordability for my customers. Buying into a system such as Assa, Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, or Schlage’s Primus means that a locksmith such as myself has to invest a minimum of $2,000 – $5,000 to purchase the hardware and confidence of the manufacturer. For this reason, I have done a lot of research on the different locks to offer my customers.

What I have found is that CX5 offers the optimal balance of high security, quality, and affordability for my customers. Here are some of the key strengths and weaknesses I have found in my research and experience with the various high-security systems on the market today.

  • Medeco’s high price tag does not buy the dependability most of us want in a high-security system. Their locks are finicky and stop working when the smallest particles of dirt get into the keyway. Medeco’s Keymark keys are made from cheap brass that makes them vulnerable to shearing.
  • Mul-T-Lock systems can be compromised, bypassing their locks with a thin key and a certain kind of tape. This is despite the excellent engineering that went into their dimple keys and telescoping pin design.
  • Schlage wants too much money for the Primus keyway and charge too much money for nearly everything they make. List price just for a Primus cylinder that goes into a commercial lever or knob lock is $93, that’s almost twice the price of a CX5 cylinder! Primus keys are made of cheap brass, making these keys vulnerable to breaking off in a lock if people are using the key to pull a door open. Of course, I like the Schlage Primus and its finger pin system a lot, but I want to provide customers with something less expensive.

The solution to the cost and vulnerabilities of these systems is CX5. It is a high-security system that is not overly expensive. CX5 cylinders provide the same level of security as a lock cylinder three times its price. CX5 high-security technology starts with the unique waved security groove side milling on the key. This innovative concept activates internal side pins which control an auxiliary locking sidebar. The security groove allows for hundreds of possible independent keyways for each key profile. CX5 cylinders are made with hardened steel pins to prevent drilling. Mushroom Top-pins and a patented sidebar makes these lock cylinders resistant to picking and bumping.

The Scorpion CX5 lock cylinder is designed to replace a standard lock cylinder across multiple applications. It can replace mortise and rim cylinders, standard deadbolt cylinders, large format interchangeable core Medeco and Schlage cylinders, Their different cylinder designs accommodate various deadbolts, knobs, leversets, exit devices, and padlocks.

Whether you are looking for a high-security system for your home or business, CX5 lock cylinders are going to provide you the best security for your dollar. If you are tired of paying too much for replacement keys and locks, or just want to redo your security system, I highly recommend CX5. The CX5 keys can only be cut by an authorized dealer and only for a person that can produce the proper ID that matches the customer on file for that account.
